With so much inspiration from the surroundings, the French Riviera was a natural home for the world’s most famous artists

The soul of an artists will always search an inspiring landscape to produce the most fascinating of creations. That is why our region, the French Riviera, attracted so many of them along the long course of history.

From Matisse to Chagall and Van Goch, these are the artists who chose to locate themselves in our region.

Nice: Henri Matisse

The richness that Nice has to offer says it all. Mediterranean sea with the lower alps in the background is a source of inspiration to anyone.
Therefore, it is no surprise that famous Henri Matisse moved spent his last years near Port Lympia. As a result of his spiritual discoveries, he even built a chapel in Vence, a few miles away from the city.

In his honor, the city council has established the Henri Matisse museum inside the fascinating Genoese villa in the Cimiez quarter.

Henri Matisse is not the only one who has fallen in love with Nice. Russian artist Marc Chagall has also found the ultimate inspiration for his creations, leading to another art museum in the Cimiez quarter dedicated to his work.

Antibes: Pablo Picasso, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong

One of the most dominant attraction in Antibes is the Grimaldi Chateau – once home to the Grimaldi family of Monaco.
In 1946, Picasso chose this establishment to be his place of residence for six months. The museum holds 245 pieces of Picasso’s creations and is located in the heart of old Antibes, meters away from the sea.

Antibes didn’t attract only painters: More artists such as F. Scott Fitzgerald Louis Armstrong were charmed by this town and lived here as well.

Cagnes Sur Mer: Pierre-Auguste Renoir

Days of sun is a rare sight in most of France. That is why Pierre-Auguste Renoir’s eye was attracted to the small town of Cagnes Sur Mer to set up his art studio. This choice is a very logic choice for an artists, as the old part of town gives a panoramic view of the Mediterranean from up high.

Vallauris: Pablo Picasso

Just two years after his staying in Antibes, Pablo Picasso made it back to the region choosing the village of Vallauris. To show his gratitude, he volunteered to paint the local chapel with paintings in a theme of war and peace.
