This week’s discovery: new Lebanese organic vegan spirit in the heart of Nice
In the infinite search for new tastes and traditions in the city that became a culinary empire (Nice), we were searching for a long time for a restaurant that can tick some specific boxes: vegan/vegetarian, organic menu and mainly, the most difficult mission of all – tasty.
Walking around the charming corridors of Old Nice, we have encountered all of the above – meet the beautifully decorated, cozy vegetarian and vegan organic restaurant called SAJ.
First impressions
Transparency is a big part we appreciate in a restaurant. Here it comes right away with an open kitchen at the entrance, making a clear message of a sense of connection, cleanliness and freshness. Curiosity intensified as we got the menus, as they revealed a unique concept and approach in Nice.
The owner himself explained the menu in details and the lunch special that included a soup, a salad and an authentic Lebanese flatbread with za’atar (Lebanese wild thyme with sumac and sesame seeds).
Then a surprise came upon us – there is no pricing! You have the choice to pay as you see fit.
We were completely staggered by the idea which makes the whole experience even more interesting. No-pricing menu takes place every second week of the month.
Middle-Eastern spirit
The recipes are inspired by conventional preparations and mixtures made from various Mediterranean countries like Greece, Cyprus and Lebanon. SAJ is actually the flatbread served in many Middle-Eastern countries, prepared on a metal griddle.
Dishes were served in a weaved bamboo basket and we ordered an extra Halloumi cheese with tomatoes and basil.
The result was a light, refreshing and tasty vegetarian food, escorted with special aromas we absolutely loved.
We literally traveled with the various flavors and herbs and the balance of the mixes.
The za’atar Saj flatbread is so thin, crusty and soft at the same time, with a strong aroma and flavor. It makes you feel full yet not bloated or in need for a nap afterwards.
After the eating, we ordered fresh juices (“Soyez Saj” and “Detox”)… you cannot but feel healthier and refreshed especially with the ginger kick!
On top of a great variety of vegan and vegetarian dishes, we tried the desserts.
The vegan and gluten-free cheesecakes and flower-based sorbet make a spectacular show for the eyes (and for the palate) with rich texture and flavor. Finally a new take on foreign flavors in Nice!
Finally, we have tasted a beverage called Lebanese White Coffee; which is actually not a coffee at all; more like a tisane that is made from lemon zest, orange blossom and hot water. The smell of the orange blossom is almost exotic, yet soothing and delicious at the same time thanks for the light touch of honey.
Conclusion
In 2022 it is still challenging to find restaurants that prioritize organic food – let alone vegan and vegetarian – despite rising demand. Saj is a great example for those who seek quality infused with Middle-Eastern roots while travelling the heart of the French Riviera – Nice.
So if you are into vegetarian or vegan cuisine, take a walk to the old town to have a glimpse. Our experience was really one of a kind.
