Creative chef and original ideas brings great results. Is it the best cafe in Monaco?
# cafe in monaco
For a long time we have been looking for a place where we can have different dishes and desserts – without ripping our wallets.
Until lately, you could have a similar concept in Cafe de Paris – but we are not big fans of the snobby vibes there, neither the ridiculous prices they take (I mean, a sandwich for 20 Euros? 16 for a tarte? come on).
The concept here is refreshing: a Mediterranean cuisine combined with dishes from the Reunion Islands (french islands east to Madagascar) – which is also the origins of the chef and creator Marcel Ravin.
Inside the ultra-posh “One” shopping and residence area in Monte-Carlo we found the place modern and appealing.
We sat inside trying to figure out the menu’s dishes.
A lot of ingredients are exotic, and we actually enjoyed asking the nice waiters what is what.
Finally we took 3 dishes: gnocchi, ravioli and kefta.
We loved the idea of taking Italian dishes like the ravioli and gnocchi and giving them a Mediterranean twist like olives, grilled carrots and ginger alongside their creams. We loved it!
Then we jumped straight to the kefta that was accompanied with Tahina, bourgoul and guacamole.
It was a true traditional dish and very well made, the meat was juicy and the presence of the bourgoul made us give up the bread.
Sweet pleasure
The food was good, but the part we really waited for was the dessert.
So much to choose from, what shall we take? Passion fruit Eclair, raspberry tarte, strawberry tarte and Tchok (description in a second).
All desserts where champions: the coulis were full of refreshing taste, the creams were state of the are and the dough was crunchy to perfection in a fashion only a talented french chef can make.
But the true star of the occasion was the Tchok, which is a decomposed dessert in a jar.
We went for the one with raspberry, chocolate mousse and raspberry coulis at the bottom.
This thing is genius because it lets you evaluate each ingredient for its own and together – it is your choice to make.
Everything about this dessert is right and perfectly balanced, fruity and giving every fruit and cream its rightful presence in the jar.
In another time, we had the pleasure of taking the millefeuille, which is in our opinion the best in the business, plain simple.
Since then, we came back to Mada so many times it began to feel like home.
This should be an example to others on how to make an impressive yet reachable cuisine in the heart of the most expensive city in the world.
